Laboratory work for Project 4 will be completed in pairs. Each assignment (e.g., quizzes, notebooks, etc.) must be completed individually.
In Project 4, your task is to complete a 2-step synthesis of a pyrrole using many of the skills you have learned this semester. Project 4 will be accomplished over 3 lab weeks. The first step of the reaction sequence will be completed in week one (Project 4A). During the second week, you will learn new 2D NMR techniques to help you confirm the structure of your Step 1 product. The second reaction will be completed during the final week of lab, and you will again employ 2D NMR to confirm the structure of the reaction product.
At the end of this project, you should know how to:
• Plan and complete a 2-step chemical reaction based on a general procedure
• Characterize reaction products by IR, NMR, and GC-MS.
• Employ additional 2D NMR techniques for product characterization.
