Laboratory work for Project 4 will be completed in pairs. Each assignment (e.g., quizzes, notebooks, etc.) must be completed individually.
In Project 4, you will practice almost all of the common laboratory skills you have used this semester. Your task is a 2-step synthesis of 1-acyl-2,4-dimethylpyrrole. Both reaction steps (4A and 4B) will be run in the first week of the lab, so you must prepare sections 4A and 4B of your lab notebook. After you complete the reaction for 4A, you should move on quickly to performing reaction 4B and record your data in the corresponding section of your notebook. You will not complete Project 4B until the second week of lab, when you will purify your pyrrole product by column chromatography.
At the end of this project, you should know how to:
• Plan and complete a 2-step chemical reaction based on a general procedure
• Purify a reaction product by column chromatography
• Characterize reaction products by IR, NMR, and GC-MS.
