Coming to Terms with Richard Nixon

Oops!  We had to remove the hero profile you’re looking for because it will soon appear in our new book Heroic Leadership: An Influence Taxonomy of 100 Exceptional Individuals, to be published by Routledge in 2013.

Our contract at Routledge required us to remove many of our profiles on our blog at this time.  But we do have other hero profiles and information about heroes on the menu bar located on the right side of this page.  Check it out!

In the mean time, please accept our apologies.  Here is more information about our new book.

  1. Once again I’m seeing a psychological story I never took into consideration before. So thanks for that.

I do realize I’m either a victim of the times or the media and I tend to think of a caricature Saturday morning cartoon version of Nixon as opposed to a more three-dimensional person.

It is unfortunate that he apparently did many things to advance the country and that’s all glossed over.

  2. True, there are quite a few reasons for Richard Nixon to be regarded as heroic; however, while taking this notion into consideration, one word continues to stand out in my mind through associations made with Nixon – "Watergate."

From Nixon's leadership roles while bettering relationships between China and the Soviet Union, to his advances in the desegregation of schools in the South, neither Nixon nor his Presidency are regarded as COMPLETE failures – I do believe this. However, although the aforementioned deeds and acts are rather heroic, I still have a hard time referring to Nixon as an actual "hero." Maybe, as the Blog states, I need to deepen my "schema" of Nixon to better understand and subsequently come to terms with the person who Nixon was. Regardless, though, in my opinion, you just cannot deny the cold, hard facts. There will always be some sort of association, large or small, between Nixon and the scandal at Watergate.

  3. Reasonable position, I think that people are always looking for scape goats and Nixon was the one. Too bad it does overshadow all the good things he did. If the last few presidents had the same scrutiny on their actions I don’t think that they would even fare as well is Prez Nixon… Just saying..
