Laboratory work for Project 4 will be completed in pairs. Each assignment (e.g., workshops, quizzes, notebooks) must be completed individually.
In Project 4, you will practice many of the skills you have learned this semester, and you will use your (new) knowledge of characterization techniques to analyze the outcome of a chemical reaction. Your objective is to carry out a reaction in which a sample of carvone is successfully converted to carvacrol (see Project 4 Background).

• Plan and execute a simple chemical reaction
• Determine the theoretical and percent yield of a chemical reaction
• Confirm the molecular structure of a reaction product from a set of characterization data (IR, MS, and NMR)
• Analyze the purity of a reaction product from the available characterization data
• Obtain and analyze a gas chromatogram
• Obtain and analyze a mass spectrum
• Obtain and analyze an infrared spectrum
• Obtain and analyze ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectra
