Project 3 – F22

Project Overview

Click here to download a copy of the Lab Notebook Template for Project 3.

Laboratory work for Project 3 will be completed in pairs. Each assignment (e.g., workshops, quizzes, notebooks) must be completed individually.

In Projects 1 and 2, you practiced purification of a solid by recrystallization and recovery of an oil after a simple workup. In Project 3, you will be introduced to a more universal and effective purification method (column chromatography), and you will learn to use the analytical technique Thin Layer Chromatography. You also will begin your study of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy as a characterization tool.

Learning Objectives

• Use TLC to determine the best mobile phase for column chromatography

• Purify a sample by column chromatography

• Use TLC to determine the success of column chromatography and obtain purified sample

• Obtain and analyze a gas chromatogram

• Obtain and analyze a mass spectrum

• Obtain and analyze an infrared spectrum

• Obtain and analyze a ¹³C NMR spectrum

• Combine multiple lines of evidence (e.g., a mass spectrum, IR spectrum, NMR spectrum, gas chromatogram, etc.) to produce a coherent argument regarding the purity and identity of a sample isolated by chromatography.
