Ian,
Great job on the map. I loved the information throughout the story and found it very interesting. Its amazing how disease can spread throughout the country so quickly. One suggestion for the map would be to add some color to the presentation as most of it is grey, including the story.

1. Yes, it is following the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in the United States.
2. Yes, your map mostly focuses on the US and the map projection works for that kind of map.
3. For the most part it seems like you are using data at the right level of generalization, with the maps focusing on smaller areas were more detailed and the larger zoom outs of the country were less detailed.
4. There weren’t a whole lot of different symbols, but from your maps story it didn’t seem like you needed a ton of variety. The points worked well for what you were trying to convey.
5. You were mostly just trying to show the locations of where major events took place during the outbreak of the AIDS epidemic so the points you used were sufficient.
6. You didn’t really use labels on the map that you made yourself, but the text you used on the sides for the explanation of the map work well.
7. Yes, when you focused on a specific area I liked how you zoomed in to that area, whereas when you focused on the whole country you made specific points where you wanted the viewer to focus.
8. For the most part the map was pretty simple as far as visual hierarchy goes, where the main points were highlighted on a dark base map, but the simplicity worked well for the map and your story.
9. I would just try to make it more colorful maybe. It was a good map overall, but even for the story section on the side I felt that the map and presentation in general needed some color.

1. The story is clear, the title tells the reader exactly what to expect
2. the projection appears to be web Mercator
3. Yes the data is generalized correctly, as you zoom in to the locations, the map becomes more detailed and street labels become present
4. The dots with blue halos are nice to look at but aren’t specific in all cases although they accurately show where the cases occur
5. Yes the symbols match the data for the locations
6. A little text symbols for the locations could add some clarity to the map, although the story provides the necessary details
7. the blue around the dots enables the map to have figure-ground orientation, the U.S. could be highlighted or focused in on during the opening slide
8. Its hard to determine if this map even has layers but the map clearly shows what is important
9. Labels for points on map
