This is a very interesting map. I noticed that a majority of the heaviest drinking states touch the Canadian border. There may be some type of correlation between a longer, colder winter and heavier alcohol consumption.

1. The basic map elements are there except the north arrow.
2. The map covers all of the United States. However, the way the image was exported it is difficult to view the information clearly.
3. The variation in color shows the overall differences between each state.
4. Time period is clearly displayed.

6. Color scheme is easy to determine which category the state fits into.
7. Labels are difficult to see.
8. States tend to cluster towards their neighbors drinking habits. For example, the states that report the lowest amount of heavy drinkers are mainly clustered together, similarly to the states that report the most engagement in heavy drinking, except for a few outliers.

1. This map as a good title, legend, and source material, but could have benefited from a north arrow and a scale bar. Info from the CDC Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey and Census American Community survey.
2. Large coverage of data, statewide across the continental US, excludes Alaska and Hawaii
3. Only compares state to state data
4. Two year old data from 2013, clearly explained information at top of map
5. Six classes including an “insufficient data” class
6. Pretty color choice! Not too blaring or overly colorful. Clear distinction between dark states (heavy drinkers) and light states
7. Labeled states, unnecessary labeling of state capitals, non-US territories and cities, and oceans.
8. On the whole, colder states tend to be heavier drinkers, except for Florida. The Bible Belt states are light drinkers. Huh.
9. Necessary inclusion of highways, makes it look a little messy.

2) Covers the continental US
3) State to state
4) 2013
5) Six
6) Good color – clear levels of drinking
7) States are labeled.
8) North states seem like they have a lot of heavy drinkers and Florida.
