Music Censorship
For decades, musicians’ artistic liberties have been censored, whether it be because of references to sex, violence, drugs, politics, or religion, it is all a restriction of one’s freedom of speech. In honor of Banned Books Week, here is a list of songs that might be on your playlists that were banned or censored in one way or another.
Billie Holiday’s protest song “Strange Fruit” which was a direct call out of American racism, especially Southern lynchings, was too controversial for most radio stations. The song, originally a poem by Abel Meeropol inspired by the 1930 lynchings of Thomas Ship and Abraham Smith, was performed by Meeropol before Holiday made it her closing act in 1938. Time magazine named it “Song of the Century” in 1999. (1)
Christian groups in Lebanon and the Philippines called for a ban on Lady Gaga’s concerts and her album as a whole. Christian and Muslim groups in 2012 worked hard to try to ban Gaga’s shows, calling them the “work of Satan.” (2)
Loretta Lynn’s song about sexual freedom and birth control, “The Pill” shocked the world in 1975 because of its lyrics discussing birth control, something that was only made legal three years before the song’s release. When the song was released, three years after its initial recording, over 60 radio stations banned the song. Modern country artists like Miranda Lambert and The Chicks were heavily influenced by Lynn’s strength to stray from the norm and talk about important topics not everyone wants to sing about. (3)
In 1993, a bomb exploded under the North Tower of the World Trade Center, killing six people. Some historians see this attack by Islamic radicals as the start of a two-decade conflict with the West. The Notorious B.I.G., nearby at the time, referenced the event in his 1994 single “Juicy” with the line “blow up like the World Trade,” symbolizing his desire for rapid success. After his 1997 death, his music became iconic in 1990s rap culture. Following 9/11, the lyric was removed from media, and the edited version of the song is still played today. (4)
In 2009, the Parents Television Council urged radio stations across the country not to play Britney Spears’s newest song, “If U Seek Amy,” because of the lyrics’ double meaning. If the title of the song is said quickly, it sounds like one is spelling out F-U-C-K me. (5)
Olivia Newton-John’s most successful song of her career, “Physical” was banned from many radio and TV stations for being too sexual. However, this didn’t stop the song from its roaring success. Over 40 years later the song’s release, her song is now sampled by modern music artists like Dua Lipa and Doja Cat. (6)
Sarah Jones’ lyrical poem, “Your Revolution” was a direct call out of the treatment and portrayal of women in hip-hop music. The FCC called out a radio station and Jones for playing the song, and when Jones sued them, the case was dismissed, but many stations didn’t play the song while the case was ongoing. (7)
Following up on a listener complaint, the FCC fined a radio station $7000 for airing the radio edit of Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady.” The FCC complained that the song contained offensive sexual references that were intended to shock audiences. (8)
The Rolling Stones’ song “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” was initially played only on pirate radio stations in the UK due to its sexually suggestive lyrics. (9)
Madonna’s 1989 hit was censored for its provocative mix of religious imagery and sexual themes. The accompanying music video, which featured depictions of burning crosses and Madonna receiving stigmata, caused outrage among religious groups and led to boycotts and bans. (10)
Though the band denied it, many believed this 1967 track was a reference to LSD due to its initials and psychedelic lyrics. As a result, the song faced bans from radio stations, particularly in the more conservative U.S. and U.K. (11)
The 1984 song was banned by MTV in the U.S. due to its music video, which featured the band members dressed in drag, parodying soap operas. While it was intended humorously, it was deemed inappropriate and sparked controversy in more conservative regions. (12)
This 1988 protest song against police brutality faced heavy censorship due to its explicit language and perceived incitement of violence against law enforcement. The FBI even sent a warning letter to the group’s record label, leading to bans from mainstream radio. (13)
Released in 2002, this anti-war ballad was censored after the band spoke out against President George W. Bush and the Iraq War. Country radio stations pulled the song in response to public outrage, severely impacting its airplay. (14)
This 2006 track was the band’s response to the backlash they received for their anti-Bush comments. The song’s defiant tone led to continued boycotts from country radio, reflecting the politically charged climate at the time.(14)

The Beatles have been an iconic part of music history since their original formation in the 60s, and well after their break-up with their impression ever-lasting on today’s music and music culture. With over 33 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone, The Beatles impression has continued through the present day generation. Fans today, whether a new fan or old, know what the Abbey Road crossing is. While the Beatles originated from Liverpool, the Abbey Road album (1969) features a picture outside the studio they often used in London. Fans today visit the crosswalk to see the studio as well as recreate the famous picture. Some may ask why fans go all the way to St. John’s Wood in London to see this? David Hepworth answers this question in his new release focused on the studio itself. Paul McCartney even gives insights into the history and the magic that lies within the studio.
I was originally inspired to write something about the Beatles since they have been a very influential band to my music taste and I find myself listening to their music quite often. I was drawn to this specific book as it talks more about the studio on Abbey Road. Although I am from the US, my family lives in London currently and we live down the road from this very crosswalk. This summer while training for a 10k, I would run past this crosswalk everyday and by the tons of people gathered outside the studio, whether they were waiting to take a recreation photo on the sidewalk or waiting to enter into the studio itself. It always amazed me how even if it was completely miserable out, cold and raining as it typically is, these people would still be there. And all of them would still be smiling and having a completely wonderful time. It made me wonder: What is so special about the inside of that studio? Is it that amazing? And while I’ve never taken a visit to the studio in my 2.5 years living there, after reading this book and learning more about it, it is on my must-visit list for when I return over winter or summer break!

This a playlist of mostly indie and indie pop artists with a few classic older songs from bands like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Jim Croce. I find that listening to these songs helps me decompress when I’ve had a long day and allows me to ease all the thoughts in my head.

The question that typically comes up every time and again – a question that I find disrespectful to everyone but one, and yet worthy of the highest praise for that one in question – is one that is hotly debated. I have seen friendships one word away from disaster over the lunch table regarding this one question. I have witnessed other’s whole argument lose its pull as soon as someone had a worthy counterargument. I have seen people argue over the topic on Twitter and Instagram as if their opinion was slated in fact. I have seen people get so emotionally invested in this question that their face begins to get red, their eyes stand on the verge of tears, and every single vein in their body is one more second away from exploding. That question – the one I hate – is who is the best musical group ever?
Where does this question even get its basis from? Are we saying some genres are better than others?
Are we saying we can compare every single artist together despite no two artists being the same – with different vocals, different instruments, different cultures, different pacing, different everything? I get humans have the natural inclination to tier and rank – competition drives the world. But honestly, to me, this is an unanswerable and impossible question. Yea, we may be able to rank albums off charting positions and sales numbers. And then logically, we can say the artist that has the most cumulative sales across their whole discography is the best. That is a LOGICAL WAY to determine it. It still blows for literally every other artist other than number one – BUT – that one artist lives enshrined as the best for forever. And yet, despite me not liking that way to derive who is the “best”, it is logical. But, also, on top of the fact that humans have the natural inclination to tier and rank, humans are not the most intelligent. And instead of deciding who is the best logically, we let emotions, opinions, and our own experiences decide for us! As if it is not obvious enough, that is a one-way ticket to disaster. It brings up some pretty interesting debate, however but humans are also stubborn, and we can only imagine that nothing will ever be accomplished.
For those reasons, and just the idea that music should be appreciated for the piece of art it is and its individuality, not ranked against others because Jeff likes drums more than strings, I think that question is pretty lame.
However, I am going to explain a little bit about one album from one group that typically scores high on America’s meaningless “tier list.” Even better, I so happen to love this band, although they are not one of my everyday listens. But, since they have some of the most gripping and innovative music of the 1960s, I thought it would be a worthy choice to write about. And, even funnier, it leads into an interesting contradiction to say that I agree with the world in this case. I do not know if that now pigeonholes me into the broader term of being “basic,” but in this case, I will put aside that argument and agree with the world.
This leads me to this point: If I were to rank all bands, and put my differences aside with that impossible question, I would put the Beatles up at the very top – maybe not one, but top twenty. More specifically, if we were to rank albums, Abbey Road would be even higher.
To begin, Abbey Road is the 11th studio album of the Beatles, their second to last studio album and 11th in just over six years. The group itself is composed of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, although Ringo was not one of the original members of the band (he replaced Pete Best in 1962). Together, the Beatles shot to worldwide prominence outside of their home country of the UK and more specifically their hometown of Liverpool. Their rise to American prominence began in the early 60s as many British bands were beginning to come to America in what was known as the “British Invasion.” If were to use the LOGICAL approach, the Beatles would be the most popular band of all time, selling 183,000,000 albums throughout their history. The album itself was a bit of a distance from some of the previous albums – they almost reverted back to their beginnings. The album did not contain many psychedelic hits as the majority of their later albums did. However, despite this, the band recorded the album at their breaking point; this was the last album that was released when they were all together, as John Lennon had made his exit from the brand prior to commercial release.
The album, in my opinion, demonstrates complete duality. Although the music is praised for being one of their best, with hit after hit, the band’s health, and the health of each of the members were deteriorating behind the scenes. The members were all annoyed with each other and George Martin played saving grace, trying to get the project to the world and to completion, whilst attempting to reduce the trouble brewing between the members. The wear and tear of fame, constant studio work, and trying to deal with it all took a toll on the Beatles by 1969, which caused a lot of the issues. They had faced adversity, as the band would experiment with cocaine, LSD, and marijuana in the mid to late 60s, followed by a crippling heroin addiction by three of the members. Behind the scenes, the Beatles were at their lowest and were struggling in their personal lives. It is still amazing that despite all the negatives, they somehow put their troubles, their conflicts, and their egos aside and created one of the most iconic songs of all time.
Some of my personal favorites off the album, are “Something,” “Here Comes the Sun,” “Oh Darling”, and “Because.” A large portion of the songs that I like most (in this case “Something” and “Here Comes the Sun”) were written by George Harrison. You could almost immediately tell when Harrison was the writer, with a distinct sound. In the case of Abbey Road, his songs were more melodic and slower, a slight diversion from the rock-infused roots that rose the band to prominence. They make for some of the most beautiful songs in their entire discography, but slightly behind my all-time favorite song from them – “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” In my opinion, that song, with Eric Clapton playing the guitar in the background is the greatest Beatles song. The slower and melodic piece, with the guitar sounding almost as if it really was crying is nothing short of a masterpiece. And so, I consider myself biased in response to my favorites – George’s style and influence was something that resonates with me. That is yet another reason why I dislike ranking. Because in this case, my opinions, and biases seep through heavily.
Finally, as for the most influential and iconic portion of the piece, the Abbey Road album cover has become one the most definitive images of the band. Although an album cover that was very simplistic in nature, the image holds a variety of meaning and captures the Beatles’ spirit and careers all in one image. The image itself features all four Beatles walking along a crosswalk on Abbey Road, which is a street in London where EMI studios, the recording studio of the Beatles was housed. From left to right, there is George Harrison, in a jean shirt, jeans, white boots, long hair and a beard. This encompasses their later years, in which most of the members began to grow their hair out amidst the war years and counter-culture movement. To his right is Paul McCartney in a blueish-grey suit, a cigarette in hand, and a shorter hairstyle that is reminiscent from their pre-fame days. Afterward is Ringo Starr, dressed in a black suit. Finally, John Lennon finishes the image, with his long hair and all white appearance. Although not traditionally associated with the image, John being last in line wearing all white to me symbolizes heaven and the idea that the band is nearing their end. They are looking to the light and waiting for their come to end. The final piece of the album cover that many do not know is that the photographer only took six images of them. The Beatles walked down back and forth along the street three times. This cover image was the fifth image taken, and they were walking away from the studio. If we were to blow up the image, EMI would be on the left. This also foreshadows their immediate exit, as them walking away from EMI hints at their careers together ending.

The everlasting impact of the band and this album is one that will live on forever in the minds and hearts of all music lovers. It is so popular to this date, that in 2019, 246,000 vinyl copies were sold. This comes over fifty years after its initial release. And so, to close, despite saying in the beginning of this piece that I hate rankings and considering a band to be the “best,” if I ever had the chance to make my opinion fact and that that becomes the standard everyone will have to adhere by – I would place Abbey Road in the top 15 albums of all time.

This playlist was inspired by Paul McCartney (sometimes known to British fans as “Macca”) and the delightful quirky streak evident throughout his music career. His odder tracks also highlight the startling versatility of his voice and his interest in experimental recording techniques.
Let’s start with 2 versions of the same song. “Coming Up” was the opening track on the 1980 album McCartney II. The song makes use of synthesizers and sped-up vocals using a vari-speed tape machine.
The video for this version actually premiered on Saturday Night Live on May 17, 1980 and features multiple McCartneys and a couple of Linda McCartneys as a (fictional) band called the Plastic Macs.
This version peaked at number 2 on the UK singles chart, while in the U.S. and Canada a live version of the song recorded in Glasgow in 1979 was released and became the hit version peaking at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
McCartney’s old bandmate John Lennon really liked the album version of the song, saying “I thought that ‘Coming Up’ was great, … And I like the freak version that he made in his barn better than that live Glasgow one.” So herewith, a playlist highlighting Macca’s “freaky side”. I might have gotten a bit carried away with this list, but there’s so much fun stuff out there, I couldn’t resist! – MAA

“Kreen-Akrore” (A lo-fi instrumental jam session. From McCartney, released 1970)
“Mary Had A Little Lamb” (Not a rocker at all, it’s a cute little children’s song based on the nursery rhyme. A non-album single, released in 1972.)
“Hi, Hi, Hi” (Quite a fun little rocker. Banned by the BBC for sexually suggestive lyrics and drug references. A staple of Wings live shows in the 1970s. Non-album single, released 1972)
“Magneto and Titanium Man” (A comic book inspired song featuring Marvel characters. Endorsed by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. From the Wings album Venus & Mars released in 1975.)
“Temporary Secretary” (Another 1980 track from McCartney II. Described in Rolling Stone as an “oddly catchy electro-pop nugget, about a slightly creepy-sounding guy looking to hire a temp.” Can’t argue with that assessment, really.)
“Step Inside Love/Los Paranoias” (This track from the Beatles Anthology 3 begins as a demo of a song for Cilla Black and morphs into an amusing jam session. Recorded in 1968. Released in 1996.)
“Old Siam Sir” (From the seventh and final Wings studio album Back to the Egg, released in 1979)
“Flaming Pie” (A track from the 1997 album also entitled Flaming Pie.)
“You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)” (A rather nutty music hall comedy number recorded between 1967 and 1969 and released as the B-Side to “Let It Be” in 1970. Listen for McCartney’s sleazy lounge singer character!)
