Week 3: Personal Contributions

It has been interesting to see how the work I do actually is a part of the whole. For instance, we have a specific clause in our contract that goes to our retailers stating they they cannot resell on Amazon or any other similar platforms (not sure of the wording). So, one of my responsibilities is checking in on Amazon weekly to make sure there are no customers who are using amazon as a platform, and this week I actually found a customer, so it was interesting to see that process. Also, as we find other people reselling our products we have to find other ways to remove their listings, so it has been interesting for me to learn that process and initiate it. I also do a lot of work with inputting data into our GSPs, which is essentially a measure of inventory movement, sales, and all other income against our projections for each business day in a month. For me, as a leadership and finance major this is really interesting to see how their projections line up with reality. In addition, my supervisor is encouraging me to pick one project of my own, that obviously relates to their work but that is my own way of investigating something of my own. I have proposals with him this week about my potential projects but I am really looking forward to getting to pick something of my own, while obviously making sure its beneficial to us both. This has definitely been my first work experience where I feel like the work I’m doing is both helpful and making an impact in some sort of a way, so I am excited to kind of expand that while pursuing something of my choosing.

  • Sounds like though some of the work could potentially be tedious (to some) – like looking for items posted for resale on Amazon – that the work you are doing is significant to larger organizational goals. So I imagine that is very satisfying. Have you found that any insights you have from theories/concepts in leadership studies have informed your work, your decisions/actions, been shared with your colleagues (to enhance teamwork, efficiency, etc.)?
