Theories in Action

Week 6: Theories In Action

Over my time here I have seen a lot of different and interesting leadership styles. One of the theories that I consistently find myself relating the upper level management at my company to is the idea of multiple intelligences. There are different managers with different abilities that compliment each other. One has very strong social and emotional intelligence. Another is extremely smart in the typical manner. He is an expert in the field, and carries himself like a surgeon despite never having gone to med school or the like. Another is more focused on the business side of things, marketing, increasing sales. His intelligence is less specialized and more broad, in my opinion. In a similar sense, the manager with high social/ emotional intelligence is a charismatic leader, people listen when he talks, his presence in a room is always felt. The manager with a more clinical intelligence is more task oriented, making sure everything that needs to get done is getting done in a correct and timely manner.
The mask of command is also something that occurs to me regarding our CEO. Part of that is due to how busy he is. He travels often, and even when he is in the office he is often unreachable on important calls. The other aspect of the mask of command he embodies is keeping certain things from the staff. He deals with high level company business. Make or break type stuff. Part of that means he has to keep news that might hurt morale or distract in some way. At the same time he is very open with good news, updating the staff often when things are going well, which seems to be often (maybe due to this mask of command.)
