Last Week

I had my final week at Youth Life this week, which was very bittersweet. It was great to spend the week with the kids and focus on their progress. We maintained the normal schedule for the week up until the last day of class. This meant that I was able to still be making strides with the kids up until the final day. In fact, one of my kids really started to understand a new concept during the last few days!

On the last day, one of the lead teachers gave thank you cards to all the interns. The card was very sincere, personalized, and thoughtful. It was great to get a thank you note from one of the lead teachers because it emphasized that I was appreciated, even if I was just an intern. I think that this shows that while there is a hierarchy in the leadership at the organization, there is mutual respect and appreciation for all workers, no matter what age or position they hold. I think this warm, welcoming environment is great to work in. Additionally, I think the thoughtfulness and openness of all the employees at Youth Life that I worked with are a large reason that Youth Life is such a strong and impactful organization.

After finishing our last day, we went out to eat as a staff at a local restaurant in Richmond. We had staff dinners three times throughout the summer, which was really great. We were able to bond, get to know each other, and talk about work. I think it made me closer to the other interns, but also to one of the lead teachers, which is important and valuable since she is a mentor and role model for me personally.
