Week 6- Personal Contributions

As the summer rapidly comes to a close, it is crazy to think that I only have four more weeks of work. With regard to my contributions, I think that I have done as much as possible in the amount of time given. One important thing that I have yet to write about is the emphasis that the company places on networking and relationship-building. Not one employee, whether senior executive or intern, is unwilling to get to know his/her coworkers. I find this emphasis on building a social network extremely important, as it allows employees at any level to go above and beyond their own job description. Just through making connections and forming relationships with those around me, I have been able to help on projects with legal and policy members that I did not previously know. Although these projects were not intended to be worked on by me, I was able to gain more experience by making friends and being bold. By building my social network and asking questions, I have been able to become a part of many new projects across departments- such as, development of a new hire orientation, creating WWYD scenario questions for a policy training, and helping research the state laws associated with sick days for the legal department. In addition, I have been able to contribute a positive attitude (and sometimes bagels) that helps maintain the energetic company culture. My biggest contribution, however, is the Employment Law Training Course that I am implementing and developing. This training will be taught to all recruiters, twice a year, and will play a huge role in minimizing risk for the company as a whole. I have learned a lot about both the company and the legal ramifications of the recruiting process. Overall, I am very proud of the legacy that I will leave behind at GM.

  • As we said many times in the spring, networking is really critical – so I’m glad you’ve had the opportunity to network so much. And I’m glad that you took initiative and had opportunities presented to you that were not necessarily part of the portfolio you imagined, that’s excellent. It sounds like you’ve really been able to make significant contributions and that the training course will be a lasting impact. Kudos. I encourage you to keep a list of all the types of projects, initiatives, tasks, etc. you’ve completed this summer as they will serve you well when interviewing; being able to talk about concrete examples of your work and how that demonstrates your abilities is really important.
