Week 8
This past week I have been working on the upcoming fundraiser I organized in conjunction with Citizen Burger Bar, and this is what I will primarily be working on this week, in addition to the newsletter.
I haven’t run into many issues/have many updates regarding my overall experience since I have been communicating 95% with outside stores, restaurants and organizations trying to get gift card donations for the fundraiser. I have been trying to channel the frustration I have with my internship into positive energy, and am shadowing a few doctors (in career paths I am interested in) next week, in between working on the fundraiser. I am hoping this provides me with potential connections for volunteering this fall in order to work with patients in a medical setting, as I was told, and supposed to, do this summer.
I did initiate a very positive conversation between the woman I work closely with at Reinhart House during the school year and my boss, who said she would provide her with some connections to other hospitals and organizations to get involved in. I think this was a great way for my boss to not only receive these connections, but hear from someone who started a Guest House at St Mary’s what the best path forward is in order to find patients to work with.
I’m presuming you did not categorize or name this post given the challenging situation you are facing at your site and the lack of real momentum you have had in terms of experience in the area you are seeking (and presumed you would receive with this internship). Again, I’m happy to connect you to some of the health based partners we work with for Justice (and/or the CCE works with) if that might be something for you to pursue. My VCU/MCV based physician may also be open to have someone shadow (if that is something he an decide without major VCU/MCV sign-off). He is a director of a VCU/MCV clinic in the Southside who annually takes medical students on service trips to the Dominican Republic.
