Week 5: Theories in Action (Transforming Leadership)
In my last reflection I explained how there were a few issues in the workplace that could ultimately have direct affects on the scholars we deal with. This week we addressed those issues and as a result I have been able to see how certain theories taught during my theories and models course has been coming to play. One theory that was focused on towards the end of this past semester was the idea of transforming leadership. In our class we looked at how this theory specifically raised the moral and motivation of the followers so that the group as a collective could reach their common goal. The increase of the motivation and morality is often in direct connection to the actions of the leader. As we sat down with the individual we discussed the issue and showed them how their cooperation would only help the program and these under represented scholars. By discussing how we have to do our best for the scholars so that they can receive their maximum level of opportunities for educational attainment. I think this displayed transforming leadership because me and the staff showed how our intentions come solely from a place of concern for the scholars. Some of the current staff were a part of the program, and as a collective we were able to express the importance of the program and how it has impacted us. By focusing on the scholars and not our own intentions we saw a quick shift in this individual. Her work ethic became ten times better and we could see her effort increase.
Good to hear how you and group addressed the issue with the TA at hand; that’s great. As for transforming/transformational leadership, would be interested to hear how you (and your colleagues) used the various factors as you worked with this individual (individualized consideration, intellectual stimulation, idealized influence, inspirational motivation). From what you described, it sounded as though you mostly employed inspirational motivation. It would serve you well to dive in a bit deeper when applying theory and identify particular actions/behaviors the exemplify/illustrate the theory; this will serve you well for the fall academic assignments.
