Solving Problems/Improving Leadership

Week 3: Solving Problems

This week was fairly normal, a little slow even. One thing that I had to work on was being firm about asking for more assignments. I had some projects to work on, but they are long term and I sometimes came to a point where I was treading water on those, and could use other things to do. When this happened, I mentioned it in the morning stand up meeting, and if nothing came out of that then I would ask other coworkers individually when it made sense. There are some coworkers who are easy to ask, even more than once in a day. For others, specifically higher up employees who can be a little bit intimidating, I have a slightly harder time asking for work because even though its not really true, I feel like I should already be busy.

So this week I had some times when I had very little to do, especially when my CEO was traveling and the work I would do for him wasn’t available. I’ve gotten more comfortable asking for assignments, and I think as time goes by I am going to be able to figure out a system where I have work and a way to get more consistently.

  • Good that you feel comfortable asking for more assignments; I haven’t had an intern yet who was criticized for operating this way. It may be that there are times – given the small size of the office – that you are able to contribute by sharing your insights as an LDST major; there may be ideas you can share with them about team work, creativity, etc.
