Solving Problems/Improving Leadership

Solving Problems

Something I’ve noticed since the beginning of my internship and have touched on in a few of my posts is the way in which different leaders within the organization utilize their skill sets and lead.

I think Blake is in a unique position where he has just risen to a more formal leadership position and is trying very hard to get the organization on a path that is sustainable for employees and manage the other leadership within the academy. He recognizes that Declan is difficult to work with but both respects him and is respected by him. This gives him the ability to disagree and deal with Declan without making a scene whereas I’m not sure that would be possible for others. Ben has a similar relationship with Declan but has been here for much longer and I think forgets that new employees aren’t as keen to working with Declan.

Blake can make a difference in this organization because very soon he is going to be the only voice that’s heard from this location as Ben and Declan relocate in December. Blake continuing to gauge where the staff are mentally during the term and communicating the problems and finding solutions will be incredibly important in his role.

When Blake finds long-term staff to stick with him, I think the communication will become easier for him because other people will also know what to do but for now, he will have to continue learning the best ways to get information across to everyone effectively and efficiently.

Blake and Ben are easy to work with and have both learned a lot from Declan from the technical aspect of the academy so I think having him in a more hands-on soccer role in a different location will be good for the organization. It’s hard because Declan thinks he knows best and isn’t very open to suggestions or input. However, Blake has made it very clear that his door is always open for suggestions and if anyone has a problem with something going on, I think Blake will be very receptive to feedback. However, it’s hard when one of the biggest thing that I think could be changed probably won’t until December. I will be interested to follow up with the other staff that are here then to hear how the transition goes and what it’s like afterwards.

  • Sounds like an interesting dynamic within the organization at this moment. I wonder if you felt you had any opportunity to share insights/understanding of teamwork, collaboration, leadership, etc. from your leadership studies that you’ve been able to share with your colleagues at the site. Seems Ben (versus Blake) may have a bit more idiosyncrasy credit from which to draw, particularly when it comes to dealing with Declan.
