Week 3- Personal Contribution

This summer has already challenged me in more ways than I could have possibly imagined. Previously, my internships have consisted of doing nothing other than the menial tasks my supervisors did not want to do themselves and I never felt truly respected or valued. In the EXCEL program, however, I have discovered that there are specific teams of GM employees who devote their entire year to making sure that the interns feel valued and integral to the company’s success. Although it was intimidating and overwhelming at first, I have become so comfortable with my coworkers that I feel confident in expressing my opinions at all times, even in meetings with senior executives. In addition, not only do I feel like my voice is truly being heard by the high-up people-leaders, but my final project will be taught and presented to every single member of the HR department. Given the size of the company, it is crazy to think how many people will be able to learn from the work that I am doing. My project involves working with both the legal and HR departments to create an Employment Law Training Course for the Recruiters and Hiring Managers. The course will be four full days, and it will cover each of the laws that affect the recruiting process, how the recruiters must comply with these laws, and allow for real life scenario training. My project is extremely important and extremely relevant, especially today when the risks of lawsuits are made even greater due to social media/instant communication. I was shocked to learn that the company did not have one of these training programs in place already, but the fact that I am the person to help implement this change is truly incredible. If given enough positive feedback, my course could become required corporate training for every single GM employee.  I am so thankful that I was given such an important project, and I am committed to doing everything that I can to ensure that it makes a difference for the recruiters and the company as a whole.

  • Wow, that really is a significant project! I hope that in your final reflection (due first week in class) you’ll include some elements from the training so I can get a sense of its scope. Sounds like GM has a really well developed internship program, which is great. As you continue, I encourage you to think about the ways in which you draw on concepts/theories/ideas from leadership studies as you complete tasks, make decisions, interact with colleagues and/or interpret interactions with colleagues, etc. Such reflections will serve you well when completing the academic assignments this fall.
