Week 2: Leader Follower Relationships
The leader/ follower dynamic at my work is quite relaxed in general. I am working at a young company, it was started only about four years ago. There are only about 12 people in the office max, and usually less. Most of the employees have been working there only a year or so, the CEO and other high level employees are younger than most at their level. These factors definitely play into the office atmosphere being so casual. Of course there are serious times, especially in the morning stand up meeting, and pretty much every meeting that we have. But during general work time there is almost always music playing in the office. There fairly often is talk about sports or music or whatever else that has nothing to do with the work at hand. The upper level employees, the bosses, don’t mind this and participate in it as well.
The interactions between the employees and their bosses is fairly relaxed in a similar way. Its quite democratic and participatory. There isn’t domination in the typical way you might expect even with us interns. One high level employee doesn’t say please or thanks much talking to us, but he’s still genial and usually relaxed, and hes probably the most serious one. The CEO himself is extremely polite, will hold doors open for everyone, asks lots of questions and is quite humble. Its really admirable with all the responsibilities he has, what he’s achieved and all that he has on his mind in a given day. Its something I aspire towards certainly.
So the way in which individuals interact is pretty informal; I imagine it is more formal when interacting with clients. Is work generally completed by individuals, or do individuals work in teams/departments? Not sure I completely understand whether decision making is centralized or decentralized. You seem to feel that the organization is productive as it currently operates; will be interesting to see if the informality changes when issues arise/there are problems/etc.
