Assert your Leadership
I believe that in many categories, my supervisor Zach is a very good leader and has made a lot of smart decisions. There are definitely areas where I think he could improve though, as there are with any leader. To this point, Zach has done a great job at keeping me busy with tasks, giving me trust and responsibility. The main issues that I see though involve his business partner who is helping to launch the company.
His business partner, Chloe, is a very smart woman who has created the first completely sustainable cafe in New York. She is where we get all of the food which we plan to sell in our healthy vending machine. Unfortunately, I do not believe she has her priorities straight when it comes to launching the business, and I do not think Zach has done a great job of correcting this issue.
The perfect example occurred just last week. We have been looking for someone to help us build a brand around the company. Chloe has connections to some freelancers who have expertise in this field. The problem is that she is too focused on the branding. She dislikes the name and colors of the company and is set on changing them. Zach was dragged into three or four meetings last week to discuss branding. This is a huge waste of time for Zach who is working hard to make sure all other parts of the business are ready for launch. Furthermore, all of the freelancers are requesting roughly $15,000, which is simply money we do not have. I think Zach needs to be more stern and authoritative in his attitude toward Chloe. Unless he confronts her, she will continue to slow things down so we can focus on branding. This seems silly to me because we do not even have a company to brand yet. I think Zach needs to have a serious talk with her to se the record straight and keep our priorities in line.
Sounds like a challenge. Indeed, branding is an essential element to a company’s success, but you are correct – a product needs to be well conceived and developed in order to brand it. My guess is that with all products, however, development and branding are likely being discussed simultaneously – to some extent. Given your leadership studies, how might you characterize the behaviors/actions you are witnessing with the two partners? How might you describe the nature of their behavior/approach/style and how might you advise them to proceed (perhaps using more constructive language)?
