Week 3 at Bose Corperation
Transformational leadership, as it pertains to a business, is exactly what Bose embodies as a company. The values that the company honors are worth mentioning because they are true to a transformational leadership type of environment. Their values are: innovation, respect, passion, value, integrity, and excellence. Although on the website it just seems like a long list of quality words, the employees truly embody these ideas. People have a huge amount of respect for each other, no matter your background, age, position, or authority.
My team at Bose is extremely transformational in terms of motivation strategies, collaboration approach, and overall team culture. From every level of the company, employees are given opportunities to excel and grow. I see this every day when I go to work. My team consists of people of all different levels within Bose, yet our meetings reflect total equality. Everyone is given a fair amount of time to speak about necessary information or concerns and nobody’s input is disregarded.
My bosses are willing to roll up their sleeves and work hard to get things done. This is important for the lower level employees to see, because it is inspiring and encouraging. Everything is done in teams here. Since I started three weeks ago, I have been a part of every meeting that the team has, to stay informed and up-to-date. This allows me to watch my coworkers and see how hard they are working and how intelligent they are. I am lucky enough to be a part of a team that trusts me with projects that will end up useful to them long after I leave (hopefully). With these responsibilities, I am able to take ownership and, with help from my team members, create a great outcome.
I think the team orientation at Bose works well for the company and the employees. Everyone is open-minded, allowing for the values of respect, innovation, and passion to be very apparent. Another aspect of transformational leadership I experience at the office is the importance of team-building. For example, today there were not many people at the office and the director of our division decided she was going to treat everyone to ice cream. She recognizes the importance of cohesion among coworkers, which is why she is also planning a picnic during the workday for the entire division, so we can socialize without having to focus on work. The importance of team-building outside of the office can make a huge difference within the office in terms of both overall morale as well as work efficiency and quality. The quality of the environment at Bose is amazing to be a part of and as an intern, I am glad to be so accepted, trusted, and respected.
You’e definitely provided some examples of behaviors/actions that illustrate key factors of transformational leadership (idealized influence/charisma, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration). It would be good to identify/reflect on specific examples of other behaviors/actions that illustrate those factors you’ve not touched on here. The more specific examples you reflect on this summer, the better equipped you’ll be to complete the academic assignments this fall. Sounds like a really engaging and equitable environment in which to work.
