My First Operating Process Manual

This week I completed my first assignment.  As I said in a previous post, all assignments are self assigned.  The first thing I assigned myself was a project creating an operating process to manage one of the systems that Cavi uses.  The system is called Handshake and is used to connect companies to university students. The operating process that I created consists of a series documents used to describe a standardization for how Cavi uses Handshake.  I created this document by following the format that Cavi uses for all operating process documents. In order to initiate the project, I spoke with the previous employee who ran Cavi’s Handshake account to begin gathering information.  I researched the different ways to use Handshake and how Cavi will be most effective in leveraging the system.

My research throughout this project consisted of speaking with Cavi employees, university coordinators, and understanding all possible ways to use Handshake from its website.  The documents I created include the account credentials, the aspects of Handshake that need to be managed and how to manage these activities, as well as how these processes will be successful.  It is most important to include how the process will be evaluated and measured to determine success in the future. The documents on how to run this system within Cavi will be used to train future employees who will work with the system.  They will also help to manage the current operation of Handshake and monitor the website’s success. My operating process adds significant value to Cavi and the effectiveness the company has in its relations with universities.

  • Sounds like an interesting project. So this is predominantly an internal (Cavi) document – the operating process – right? It is not something that university students would read to understand how to use Handshake, right? Documenting how systems function and measuring the extent to which they are used, how effectively they are used are really critical things for any organization – so nice job. During the process of working on this project, did you find that you drew any insights, etc. from your LDST classes, classroom experience, etc.?
