Organizational Culture

Organizational Culture

The Organizational Culture at Olé is quite interesting. There is a low task structure and everyone is expected to be productive but nobody has a set supervisor to ensure productivity. One of the other guys that works here was saying that sometimes you just have to find your own things to do around here, which is honestly pretty easy because there’s so much to do around here. However, it made it tough when I first got here without set expectations or tasks to do. Although this was difficult when I first got here, I’ve quickly learned to appreciate it because I can decide what I’m interested in and focus on that.

The majority of the employees at Olé are men, the only other woman is a 28 year old named Tory. This had made it slightly difficult to adjust especially because the men aren’t used to having women around. The girls in their programs are less committed than most of their boys and you can tell their have stereotypes about Tory and me. When we are doing something, they look over our shoulders more than anyone else’s. Tory came from working at Deloitte, was very successful in managing small businesses, and Olé is a small business but her role includes only minimal tasks. They have an intern, Erik, communicating with their counsel and business director. They don’t ask for Tory’s input on anything and she feels like she has a lot to offer as a consultant for Olé. I think this will offer me a unique perspective over the next 7 weeks of my internship.

  • Wow, what an interesting gender dynamic. Given the low task structure, seems as though orientation to the organization, communication within the organization, etc. may be less formal/structured? I know that gender issues interest you anyway and are an area of focus for your honors thesis (I believe) – so that dynamic is definitely one to watch and one that should produce good material for your more academic papers in the fall. Seems as though – at first glance – this gendered perspective is a potential weakness for the organization.
