Creating a network
This past week was full of surprises. My boss, the founder of the company I am working at, created a partnership deal with another entrepreneur who has been recognized for her efforts in sustainability. Although I do not directly report to her, a new leader/follower dynamic was created. Almost immediately she began assigning me tasks. Even though she is very new to the company, I did not mind being assigned tasks by her because I can tell that she sees me as a valuable asset to the team. I also think that all of my relationships at the company become stronger when I am assigned a task because these tasks instill trust. Each time I am assigned and complete something, the trust between me and other employees grows because they feel that they can rely on me.
While thinking about our relationship I began reflecting on the LMX theory of leadership and the network of dyadic relationships that are slowly coming to light. Right now there are only 3 employees at the company but there are many others that are involved. Although my strongest relationship is with the CEO, I can sense a new one starting to develop with the new partner, Chloe. We had a meeting with the three of us where my input was heard with equal voice and actually met with praise. One of the most important aspects of my relationship with these other two employees is respect. In the past, I have felt that my age prohibits others from really listening to what I have to say, but there is a clear respect shown for me by everyone at this internship.
My relationship to my superiors will continue to change as new employees are hired. My supervisor has hinted at hiring another intern who I will actually be managing. This not only strengthened our relationship, but now it seems I will be taking on a whole new role and developing my own style of leadership that I fell can be effective.
As I’ve said previously, so interesting to be involved in such a small but growing organization. Every new employee acquired at this point will definitely impact your experience. Given the size, seems there is no presence of an out-group; would be interesting to see if any out-group develops as the organization grows. However the dynamic changes, you’ll want to keep good notes along the way so you are really able to capture the development of the organization this fall.
