Leader/Follower Relationships

After my second week of working, I have gained a tremendous amount of confidence in what I am required to do in this business. In this business, there are interns, entry-level worker, team leader, assistant managers, and managers. Everyone obviously either starts out as an intern or in the entry-level position. Entry-level workers are lead and trained by their specific Team Leader. My Leader, Ryan Mace, has done an excellent job preparing me to be able to handle the tasks of the job on my own. He has been in the marketing industry for quite some time, totaling over 9 years. I believe that his experience and enthusiasm for marketing for clients is what makes him as proficient and productive as he is. This week, I completed my training a week early. I believe this is due partly to how quickly I am able to adapt and learn new systems, and partly because of how experienced he is. Now I will be looking to go solo on my own marketing ventures. Although Team Leaders and Assistant Managers are usually the ones leading the company, there are a few entry-level co-workers that I have recognized exhibiting leadership and producing a decent amount of followers. One in particular is a guy named Nathan. Nathan not only lead the entire company in sales for the week but has already built a squadron of people who are ready to become a part of his team once he is promoted to the Team Leader position. This gives me encouragement to work hard, and built that rapport with some of the members in the company as well.

  • So glad to hear that you have a good team leader. From your reflection, it seems as though there is hierarchy (managers overseeing assistant managers, who oversee team leaders who lead entry-level employees and interns), but that there are also collaborative teams. As you continue, would be good to reflect on the degree to which work is directed; do team leaders and members of teams function fairly autonomously? Where are decisions made and who makes those decisions (e.g. are they collective decisions, do team leaders or assistant managers make decisions)?
