First Week at The Golden Word
I just completed the first week of my internship at The Golden Word, a boutique public relations firm based in Richmond, Virginia. Although I am technically an intern for The Golden Word, I also work heavily on its sister company, Here. Weekly.
Here. Weekly is a weekly newsletter sent out to subscribers about three happenings in Richmond that they should try over the course of the weekend. Here. Weekly is for the curious who want to explore Richmond, and we encourage them to actually get out and try what we suggest by providing insider tips and vital information. See an example here.
At my first day on the job, previous intern and fellow Jepsonite, Ashlee Korlach, came to transition me into my role and set me up on all of the necessary platforms for the summer. Ashlee really set me up for success since my supervisor would be out of town through Wednesday.
On Tuesday and Wednesday I got myself set up and organized and mainly focused on tasks that were assigned to me through Teamwork, an online portal that organizes tasks for the work space. I started organizing documents that had been left for me disorganized and started in on my Instagram strategy as well as my strategy to gain membership for Here. I also researched for and composed my first newsletter for Here. Weekly, which I will post on a future blog post as they do not get posted to the website until two weeks after to encourage people to actually sign up to receive the email newsletter itself.
On Thursday my supervisor returned from her trip to New York where she had been completing a media tour with on of her The Golden Word clients. We had an in-depth meeting regarding goals for the internship this summer as well as goals for The Golden Word and Here. Weekly as a whole. We also had a catch-up meeting with one of the other The Golden Word full-time employees where I got to learn more about their clients.
Overall, this week was an in-depth week of transitioning and setting myself up for success regarding the rest of the summer.
Sydney, sounds like a productive first week even though your supervisor was there for only part of the week. Good you had an outgoing Jepson intern to provide some training. I presume you posted this under “organizational culture” because you discussed learning norms, etc. at your site, the system you sue for communication/task management, etc. I presume you also posted under “personal contributions” as you talked about your first newsletter, setting up accounts, etc. as they are items you tackled this week. Both are good and I understand it was the first week, but you will likely want to capture more about the organizational culture and other more substantive contributions in future blogs. But you are off to a good start!
