Hollywood Cemetery

Last year, Dr. Winiarski’s students created digital story projects based on unique graves in Richmond’s historic Hollywood Cemetery. This web mapping application allows for the videos to be embedded in the informative section on one side of the screen while an interactive map shows the precise locations of each grave within the cemetery borders on the opposite side.

1. This storymap tells a story of various different graves located throughout Hollywood Cemetery.
2. Good projection for a storymap.
3. You used a good level of generalization considering you were mapping such a small area. You used great extent as well.
4. Symbology is as clear as it can be. When you scroll down through the story, it takes you to the next location on the map and places a pointer on it.
5. Symbols match the data considering you’re just pointing out various locations while telling the story.
6. Text is good in the story portion.
7. Map doesn’t really have figure-ground organization, unless you consider the pointers showing location over the terrain map.
8. Map doesn’t really have visual hierarchy, but most storymaps don’t.
9. I truly believe this map is good the way it is, however, you could add a few elements to the map to create some type of visual hierarchy and figure-ground organization.

1. Do I know what my map’s story is?
Yes, the information of Hollywood Cemetery is clearly shown and projected on the story map effectively. I think you fully used the merits of a story map to represent your data.
2. Am I using the right map projection?
I am not sure if it is the best choice or not, but since we can zoom out and zoom in on a story map, it doesn’t really matter. I wish you could show bigger picture of the map, too.
3. Am I using data at the right level of generalization?
Yes, I think the generalization is okay, but sometimes you could add more information on the map, like the names of sites or at least the city name.
4. Is my symbology clear?
Yes, there were few symbology used, but I like it as simple.
5. Do my symbols match my data?
I think so. The sky-blue points are indicating the locations clearly. And people already know this kind of symbol is usually indicates places on online maps like google map.
6. Have I used the right text symbols?
Yes, but I think you could include more texts on the map, since there is no text symbols used on the map. Maybe try to include the names of cities or states.
7. Does my map have figure-ground organization?
Yes. It is focused on Hollywood, but if I zoom out too much, I can easily get lost because there is no boundaries or names of cities shown.
8. Does my map have good visual hierarchy?
I think you need to work on this more, but I think you wanted to make this map function like GPS on google map, so you didn’t put too much hierarchy on this map. But you can still differentiate places that are more important from the places that less important. It will help the audience not too lost the information they are looking for.
9. Do I need to add anything else to my map?
I think you did really good job idealizing the functions of a story map on Arcgis. I was really amazed! I really like that you included different kinds of resources like a video.
10. Have I asked for a critique?

Maggie,

Really cool project, I love visiting Hollywood Cemetery. A couple of things to think about…

– I would provide more text under each of the headings to break up the pictures a little more.
– Would a different basemap help better orient the user? Maybe one that is more abstract– I feel the aerial imagery distracts from the media and videos.
– I’d look at making the markers more prominent to the user (bigger and different color)
-I had trouble accessing the images in the pop-up. I would use this space to maybe orient people to that particular grave/memorial.

Great job! Excited to see this on Thursday.

Dear Margaret,

A few ideas: instead of having the Hollywood Cemetery Polygon transparent – perhaps reverse that idea and make the rest of the city/area transparent so that Hollywood “POPS”. You can also make a little buffered polygon around HC to help it pop at various scales and should set a maximum zoom out (perhaps the City of Richmond). You could also have the polygon shift to a point when fully zoomed out – a way to locate the cemetery in the city.

I also really think Justin may have a point about using a different basemap – would grey scale feel more ‘cemetery’. Or would that mean you couldn’t see individual graves?

Can you zoom in more closely on each of the sites (consistently) so that folks can really see the head stone or marker?

I also recommend doing some work on the popups so that we don’t get the irrelevant info about the parcel but just the info about the grave. Is there a place where you can tell folks how to get to the videos (like say – click the blue text?).
