Project Proposal
Natural disasters have a profound impact on both the environment and human activity. Although Richmond is not prone to a disasters such as earthquakes or volcanoes, the James River exposes the city to the possibility of flooding. For the first project this semester in this course, I would like to spatially display the threat of flooding events of different severity. I would like to map events of varying severity (ie 5 year flood, 10 year flood, 50 year flood, 100 year flood) and residential areas, as well as popular recreational destinations, to assess the damage of floods of different strengths. The scope of this project would be limited to the city of Richmond and the surrounding area. Major landmarks and constructs, such as the floodwall, might also be important factors to consider.
