Paragraph for Project

I have decided to create a map displaying poverty levels in Washington, D.C.. In doing this, I will show the regions of DC with the highest and lowest poverty levels, and how they have changed in the past 20 years. Therefor, I will show a percent change on one map. Each region will show a percentage change (positive or negative), which will show whether poverty levels have gone up or down overall in D.C. The point of this is to see whether or not Washington is going in the right direction when it comes to poverty.

Great project idea! D.C has a lot of data (opendata.dc.gov) and data collection should be fairly easy. I would try and map this at the largest scale possible, especially since D.C has such detailed data. I know you can download their buildings layer file, which might make for an interesting element to your map.

This sounds like a great project idea D.J. I think it’s really interesting that you chose to look at poverty in the nation’s capital specifically, as opposed to cities such as New York or Chicago. Hopefully you will end up seeing positive trends that show poverty levels have decreased over time. And I agree that showing these percent changes in poverty will paint a picture as to whether or not Washington is moving in the right direction in terms of helping improve poverty levels.

I have one quick question – what is your unit of analysis (aggregation)? The census tract?

You say ‘regions’ of DC do you mean like SE, NW, etc. – and do those boundaries exist and is the data available at those units?
