Gel electrophoresis is a lab method used to separate mixtures of DNA, RNA, or proteins according to molecular size, and it is used in both teaching and scholarship here at UR. Dr. Omar Quintero needed help designing electrophoresis combs (and their associated holder) that have more teeth than available elsewhere commercially. That resulted in a design that uses OpenSCAD, a CAD tool that employs scripting techniques to build 3D objects. The design succeeded, and Dr. Quintero was able to print them with his own 3D printer. Since the design is based on a script, it can be used and modified by others in the biology community.
