Final Reflections

I can think of several words to sum up my experience in this class, but the first one that comes to mind is “inspired.” Having worked in the IT field for a little over 10 years in the private sector, I didn’t think there was much more that I could learn from this course. I was definitely wrong. Technology is always changing and evolving. As teachers and school leaders, it is hard to keep up with all of the technology changes that come our way. This course introduced me to several applications, new ways to think about using those applications, as well as other forms of technology to use in the school setting.

My favorite night of class was the class that we had onsite when we were able to play with robots and Makey-Makey. I left with a lot of excitement to find ways to be more innovative when integrating technology in my education career. I learned that using technology frequently in my class is not necessarily being innovative in and of itself.

My takeaways from this course are many. Most importantly, I believe that I have a better understanding of how to roll out new technology initiatives as a leader. It is really easy to throw a new software package out there and require students, teachers, and other staff to use it. I’ve learned in this class that the process of introducing new tech requires careful planning, superior PD opportunities, and above all patience. I will finish with this thought: when you become a leader, don’t forget that you used to be a teacher! We sometimes forget how busy teachers are and why they are frustrated when you tell them that they have to learn a new software without telling them why.

Thank you Dr. Richardson for a great semester!
