Analyzing a Scene

Analyzing a Scene-Masters of None(Indians on TV)

I picked this scene because it immediately struck me while I was watching it. Last semester I read a lot of material concerning “Islamaphobia” and this scene felt like an extension of that. Although the lady interviewing Dev may not be portraying him as dangerous(a common theme in American portrayal of Middle Easterners), she is certainly conveying what her perceived sense of “Indianness” is. American media often portrays Indian people as very foreign and different from most white Americans. Also certain roles such as cab drivers and convenience store workers have been seen as jobs played by predominantly if not only Indian people. This ideology of Indian people can be seen very often in media and even among our peers. I felt that analyzing this scene would help fight this stereotype of Indian people by exposing and analyzing the ideology of the critic interviewing Dev.
