portal 00-10 (rachel)
I really enjoyed playing portal. I’ve never played the game before or even heard of it before this class so I wasn’t really sure what to expect. All I knew was that it was going to involve portals and puzzles of some sort. The first test chambers were fun but extremely easy. At first I was unclear of what exactly I was supposed to do, I knew the goal was to get to the end door from where you start but in a few of the puzzles I wasn’t exactly quite sure what to do at first. I just kept making portals and accomplishing nothing. However, the game provided enough basic information and I knew it was a puzzle so I was able to figure it out rather quickly. Once I figured out the basics I really enjoyed playing the game and solving the puzzles.
The graphics were pretty good but not all that exciting, most rooms looked the same, they had white/gray walls and tiles and cameras in the corner. And I liked the idea of the game overall. Since it was my first time playing I was just focused on getting through the chambers. If I went through those chambers again I would try to do other things and find some secrets of the game rather then just going through each chamber as quickly as possible. Also, since these first chambers were very simple and didn’t seem complicated at all, I’m excited to see what kind of challenges the next levels bring (I could begin to see how the levels could get more difficult in level 10 when some theories of motion are implemented). Overall, I enjoyed playing and am excited to continue.
I had a similar experience with the first couple of levels. I got stuck in the first room for a few minutes trying to figure out where I was and what I was supposed to do. After completing the first level, I realized that the objective was to solve puzzles to open doors and move through different rooms. I thought it was cool that the game only gave you little graphic instructions because it provided guidance but made the game more challenging.
