Portal 00-10 (James)

The beginning of Portal was really enjoyable, but really easy. I was going through it really quickly and I stopped myself only when I realized I went past level ten and was now on level 14. Already knowing the basics from watching other people play made the tutorial feel unnecessary, but Portal does do a very good job in giving clear instructions on how to play. I also realized that, since I came in with the mindset of it being a puzzle, I was already trying to put things together in my head, so even if the game didn’t tell me how to do certain tasks or ideas, I was already in the process of solving it and was okay with the lack of information.I did notice however, that I stopped listening Glados when I felt like I was getting a hang of it, so it is quite possible that I missed instructions here and there.

Otherwise, the game kept me interested and the graphics were not that bad, taking into account how that it was released October 10 of 2007 (Is that why we started the game now? To celebrate its release date on October 10th?). As I said, the graphics were not too bad, but the design of the rooms were pretty basic. It mostly consisted of whites, grays, darker grays, and the occasion puke liking water. Game play wise, it was really easy to understand that my job was to get from point A to point B. I know I could have started working to get the radios and not just focus on going from A to B, but I didn’t feel like it and I missed the first one since I did not know how to pick up stuff yet, so I said screw it. Instead, I started destroying all the cameras for fun to see if Glados would do something about it, but she only kept repeating that I was destroying necessary equipment. In the end, its simple controls and basic use of physics made the beginning really fun and I already want to play more.

The beginning is quite simplistic, probably just to get the player into a groove. The first time I played Portal I did get into that “groove” and just went through its entirety like I didn’t have a life. Its good at enticing you to keep progressing through the levels as the unknown of the next chamber is to interesting to stop. Games that can do that have succeeded.
