UR Blackboard Maintenance Outage – This Thursday, 1-8am

In order to install patches and maintenance software on the UR Blackboard servers yet minimize impact on usage, the system will be unavailable during an early morning upgrade on Thursday, August 4, 1am – 8 am.  The user interface will not change and all course content will still be available after the work.  Please schedule your UR Blackboard usage accordingly and contact us at blackboard@richmond.edu with any questions or concerns.

UPDATE: the upgrade has been completed 2 hours ahead of schedule, and UR Blackboard is now available for regular usage.  Again, please contact us at blackboard@richmond.edu with any questions or concerns.

Course Entry Point

As we start up a new academic year, it might be helpful to revisit a best practice for setting up your course. After you request your course, you might want to copy a previous course into the new course. When a course is copied, the navigation buttons (those on the left side of the screen) are placed at the bottom of those created from the course template. You may not want the buttons created by the course template and want to delete these. STOP! First, you will need to change the course entry point for the course. This is located in the Course Management area under the Control Panel and then Customization.

Avoid Using Firefox 5, Internet Explorer 9, and Chrome with Blackboard

The only certified and supported browsers for Blackboard include Firefox 4.x (Mac and Windows), Internet Explorer 8 (Windows), and Safari 4 and 5 (Macintosh only).  We typically recommend people to use Firefox with UR Blackboard because we have seen the least number of issues with that browser and often works as an alternative browser when someone has technical difficulties with IE or Safari.  However, Firefox 4 is not yet certified for Blackboard so please continue using Firefox version 4.x .  We will post updates as browser compatibility information is updated.

Did you upgrade and need to go back a version? Use the following links to download previous versions:

IE 8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/downloads/ie-8

Firefox http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html (there is no link to versions 4.x, but 4.x is compatible with Blackboard)

Announcement Link Issue

We have had several students contact us having problems trying to download content from their courses. Each student is trying to access the content by clicking on the link in the course announcement which should take the student to correct content item. Instead the students are presented with an icon and the name/description of the item but not the link to the item.

The files can be accessed if the students navigate through the course buttons to the correct item. At that point, the students see the file link and are able to download the file.

We are recommending that students use the course buttons to find course content instead of clicking on the links provided through course announcements if the student is not seeing the document file link.

We are in conversation with Blackboard about this issue and we will post an entry when we are able to correct this problem.

UPDATE – Scheduled Blackboard Outage Complete – Friday, April 15, 10-10:30PM

UPDATE: the maintenance has been completed, and UR Blackboard is again available.

If you are now checking Blackboard availability and you still get an outage page, please force your web browser to refresh the page (Ctrl-R key combo on Windows and Command-R combo on Mac for most browsers).  If you are still unable to reach UR Blackboard, please temporarily try another web browser and/or computer because there is most probably something on your computer preventing it from accessing the live server.

Original Message:

There will be a UR Blackboard outage scheduled for this Friday at 10PM that should last approximately 1/2 hour.  This will update server firmware, necessary for continued operation.  If you are checking Blackboard availability after 11PM Friday night and you still get an outage page, please force your web browser to refresh the page (Ctrl-R key combo on Windows and Command-R combo on Mac for most browsers).  When in doubt, visit the UR Blackboard news site for an update when services have been restored.
