Arachnophonia: George Gershwin’s “Piano Concerto in F”

Piano Concerto in F

George Gershwin was an American composer who revolutionized the music scene in the early 1900s, merging the new jazz genre with classical. His experimental piece Rhapsody in Blue merged a classical orchestra with concert piano in a pseudo-piano concerto form to wild acclaim. Despite classical music’s rigid and highly critical tradition, Gershwin created a way for listeners to experience the new American jazz style in a concert hall setting. The rapid success of Rhapsody in Blue gave Gershwin a chance to compose a full-length concerto in 1925, his now immortal Piano Concerto in F. Gershwin’s longest work, the concerto is divided into three movements which each highlight a distinct style of jazz.

The first movement, I. Allegro moderato, uses the Charleston and features syncopation in a swing style just debuting in the US at the time. Its first climax introduces the piano into the concerto in a melancholy start, quickly dazzling listeners with key changes and pentatonic scales uncommon to classical piano concertos. A second climax features sweeping strings and huge chord progressions before descending into more syncopated rhythms that one could imagine dancing to in the 1920s.

The second movement, II. Andante con moto, is a slow section similar to an Adagio or Largo movement but uses a blues feel to characterize the emotional equivalents in typical classical movements. His alternations of instruments soloing the main theme, whether that be violin, piano, or trumpet, represent the big band jazz style growing during the concerto’s premier.

The third movement, III. Allegro agitato, starts with a flourish of woodwinds and brass to begin an exciting, fast-paced theme introduced in the first movement. Gershwin continues to experiment with jazz-inspired chords and syncopated rhythms, emblematic of his American heritage and pride in the new music genre.

Overall, Gershwin’s experimental Piano Concerto in F expands upon his work with Rhapsody in Blue and the excitement surrounding American jazz during the 1920s. Gershwin once asked another modernizing composer, Maurice Ravel, to mentor him. Ravel promptly rejected the request, stating “Why would I teach you to become a second-rate Ravel when you are already a first-rate Gershwin?” The unique output of Gershwin and his exciting Piano Concerto in F leave a lasting impression on listeners about the development of American music to rival great classical composers of Europe.

This is the 2004 film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s infamous 1986 musical The Phantom of the Opera, which is considered to be one of the most iconic productions of all time. It is the longest-running show in Broadway history, and second longest in West End history, indicating how well audiences have taken it over the years. The show ended its run in 2020 in London and in 2023 in New York, which has seen many viewers looking to the movie. For those who have not seen the musical, the film is an amazing way to experience the amazing songs and storytelling done by Webber. The movie tells how a woman, Christine, becomes the obsession of a disfigured man, the Phantom, who lives below the Paris Opera House.

One of my favorite things about the movie is the amount of involvement Andrew Lloyd Webber had with the entire process of production as well as the selection of the actors. It allowed his vision to match that of the vision of the musical, giving the movie the right feel. For those who have seen the musical, it is a great watch since it has so many similarities while also having elements not possible in a musical. For those who have not seen the musical, the movie version is a great introduction to the greatness of the musical and can make the plot a bit easier to comprehend on the first watch.

The Beatles have been an iconic part of music history since their original formation in the 60s, and well after their break-up with their impression ever-lasting on today’s music and music culture. With over 33 million monthly listeners on Spotify alone, The Beatles impression has continued through the present day generation. Fans today, whether a new fan or old, know what the Abbey Road crossing is. While the Beatles originated from Liverpool, the Abbey Road album (1969) features a picture outside the studio they often used in London. Fans today visit the crosswalk to see the studio as well as recreate the famous picture. Some may ask why fans go all the way to St. John’s Wood in London to see this? David Hepworth answers this question in his new release focused on the studio itself. Paul McCartney even gives insights into the history and the magic that lies within the studio.

I was originally inspired to write something about the Beatles since they have been a very influential band to my music taste and I find myself listening to their music quite often. I was drawn to this specific book as it talks more about the studio on Abbey Road. Although I am from the US, my family lives in London currently and we live down the road from this very crosswalk. This summer while training for a 10k, I would run past this crosswalk everyday and by the tons of people gathered outside the studio, whether they were waiting to take a recreation photo on the sidewalk or waiting to enter into the studio itself. It always amazed me how even if it was completely miserable out, cold and raining as it typically is, these people would still be there. And all of them would still be smiling and having a completely wonderful time. It made me wonder: What is so special about the inside of that studio? Is it that amazing? And while I’ve never taken a visit to the studio in my 2.5 years living there, after reading this book and learning more about it, it is on my must-visit list for when I return over winter or summer break!

Rock’s Backpages is an online archive of popular music journalism, from industry standards like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, to more obscure and international publications, such as Stereo Review and Melbourne Weekly. Although the site catalogues a wide array of content (including reviews, letters, obituaries, book excerpts, press releases, columns, and more), the advanced search function makes it easy to filter by subject, author, original publication, and format.

My favorite use of the site is to read old reviews of albums and artists that I like, to get a sense of contemporary critical reception. In a 1980 review of U2’s debut album Boy, Paul Mory calls the group’s music “not radical, in many ways… traditionalist.” Seven years later, in a review of the band’s seminal album The Joshua Tree, Simon Reynolds writes that the band’s very existence is “at once radical and reactionary.” I find this not-conversation of radicality especially amusing considering the band’s current reputation among my generation as that dad-rock group whose 2014 album was forced upon anyone with an iPhone— an idea that would be humorously unfathomable for those critics writing in the 80s.

Rock’s Backpages is a fascinating resource and a deep dive into the views on musicians in their prime. If you have ever wondered what mainstream journalists thought of The Beatles in 1963 or AC/DC in 1975, this resource is right for you. You can use the “Free Articles” section on the left side of the screen under the resource’s Library to find an assortment of 1000s of articles on pop and rock stars through the ages. You can also easily search for any article you want to read and filter by artist, genre, publication, or writer. Rock and Pop music took the world by storm in the 20th century and you can read all about it as it happened with this amazing resource.”
