Due to Whitney Houston’s early upbringing in gospel music, as well as her early start to stardom at 19 which lead to her background in R&B and pop, she had developed a range of vocal techniques and capabilities that were highlighted throughout her music in the form of a capella solos, rubato singing styles, frequent vocal ornamentation, modulations, and intense song climaxes (Rischar, 2004). Much like the rest of her discography, these elements of Houston’s singing style were highlighted in her version of “Higher Love.”
