The Elevated Emotional Experience of “Higher Love”

The technique of building a song to a drop in EDM music could be inspired by the usage of harmony and song structure in early disco music to bring about an emotional “climax,” inspired by the identity of “erotic” freedom and and elevated promiscuity of the 1980s (Barkin & Hamessley, 1999). This idea of freedom elevates this emotional experience even further when incorporating the gospel genre. For example, “It’s Raining Men” by the Weather Girls uses elongated vowels, bent pitches, and excitable “whooping” sounds” inspired by the gospel style to elevate the joyous experience of the listener (Barkin & Hamessley, 1999). Thus, Kygo’s EDM techniques of breakdowns, build-ups, and drops combined with Whitney’s gospel-style vocals further elevates the listening experience of the song “Higher Love.”
