Data is information that is collected using numbers. We’ve seen how data, like technology, has advanced over the years. There are many ways to collect data but I personally think the most famous way nowadays is through social media. With or without one’s consent, certain forms of social media like Tik Tok and Instagram are constantly collecting data about other people. For example, with Tik Tok it’s learned your algorithm. It picks up on these things by recognizing what kinds of videos you like whether that be dancing ones or informational ones. If you dislike it, you’ll see less of that on your feed whereas if you like it, it’s the opposite. Instagram is an example of how you’re purposely giving information to them like your name, email, age, etc. Although it is scary, we haven’t done anything to stop it and we will continue to have our data be collected.

Sometimes I feel like tiktok is reading my mind when I see a video on something I had just talked or thought about. It’s almost as if my phone, knows me better than my friends, family, or even I, know myself. And that notion is probably true, as based on my browsing history, data collected from searches, liked posts, etc. my phone (and that included,) makes it so that my phone does know me better than I know myself. Which is of technology, which are objective and logical, rational objects, really “know” someone?
I like the example of TikTok and Instagram. Privacy disclosure is a serious problem nowadays. What you see online is all according to your browsing history, which indirectly reflects your interests and hobbies. Our life is under the internet gaze. This is also the reason why we can feel relax and happy when we are playing on our phones. Like the video we watched in class, Instagram will drive a harmful circle for teenagers: the more depressed they get, the more reliant on using the app and receiving the same harmful content. Just like what you mentioned above, it’s hard for us to stop this terrible thing. We need to focus more on our real life instead of the digital world. Reducing the amount of time we spend on social media can allow us to do more meaningful things
