Participation

Participation comprises two main areas: in-person class discussions and online comments. Both are necessary and expected. Your participation, whether oral or written, should be civil, thoughtful, and kind.

Class Discussions

In-person class discussions will be numerous and organic. You should arrive to each class ready to contribute whenever discussions are opened. To prepare for discussions, complete readings as assigned and come to class with 1-2 questions/issues you want to discuss. Additionally, use the following guidelines when reading texts or engaging media.

Questions for each keyword

  • Who is the author(s)?
  • How would you define the keyword(s) for this week?
  • What is the history of the keyword(s)?
  • How has the meaning of the keyword changed over time?
  • How does the keyword help us understand “Media, Culture and Identity”?
  • Questions?

Questions for each text or media

  • Who is the author(s)/ creator(s)?
  • What is the object of study? In other words, what is the piece interested in interrogating?
  • What is the argument(s)?
  • How do they make their argument?
  • Why does this object of study matter?
  • Questions?

Questions for connecting keywords and readings/media

  • How does the keyword(s) apply to the assignment?
  • How does the assignment reveal the role of this keyword(s) in media, culture and identity?
  • Are there other keywords we have discussed that this reading/piece of media is addressing?
  • Are there other keywords we have discussed that could be used to analyze this reading/piece of media?
