It is clear that the media has evolved over the course of the last several decades. Our parents’ and grandparents’ view of the media is quite different from our generation’s view. The prime example of “new media” today is social media. Information is shared through networks such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, Twitter, and many more. This information can consist of the daily news and span all the way to hair styling tips. Younger individuals who do not want to read the newspaper are able to see instagram posts or watch TikTok videos. Lisa Gitelman explains, “To study new media today generally means to study the contemporary moment,” on page 130. People living in Virginia are able to see specific moments from other people all around the world through photos or videos that they display on social media. Although this might seem very ordinary now, this was unthinkable to previous generations.

I agree, in this new generation social media has impacted and altered several aspects of society such as the overall technology and media. In addition to the classic social media of Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, and Twitter, text messaging is a form of new media that other generations did not have the luxury to use. By having the new media, our generations attention span is lowing causing them to enhance social media with brief summaries of items such as Marielle’s example of the newspaper ads. On the other hand, social media can cause damage and harm to people rather than help them connect people around the world.
Great example of the impact of social media on contemporary culture. So what does it mean to Virginians that they can see what’s happening around the world in an instant? How does that impact culture and identity?
I think you touched on something interesting in this post, which is how varying types of “new media” impact the way we get our news. I agree that the constant and rapid circulation of information is something that has changed greatly in more recent years, with the development of the internet and also social media. Another facet of this “new media” is that social media has the power to bring awareness to things that are, like you mentioned, across the nation or the world. This can spark movements for social change, like we’ve seen with Black Lives Matter and March For Our Lives. It is interesting to see how the evolution of media can widen the reach of news and serve a positive purpose in society.
I agree that media has evolved over the past few decades, especially with social media. There is an increased interconnectedness of people around the world that, as you noted, seems ordinary to us now but would have been unimaginable to past generations. Social media and the internet in general have brought so many new educational, social, and political opportunities to users. I also like your point about how if someone doesn’t want to read the newspaper, they are able to look at Instagram or TikTok for news related content. Our generation consumes news differently than past generations, as social media is quicker and easier with lots of visuals. On social media, users can comment on news, repost/share news, and post their own reports of news, which is different from just reading the newspaper.
