groupthink

This groupthink article really delved into the idea of how a group can be affected in numerous ways. I think this article had really focused on how groupthink is described as a form of communication within a group and the fact that it really disturbs the concise thought process. It is more imperative in “groupthink” for member to agree amongst each other and recognize that. To me it is very interesting that this thought process is seen as a negative action.

In the article it states vividly that people in “groupthink” are almost too nice and avoid the thoughts of being “too critical”. This thought process can be extremely inefficient for a group. This is because the progress that is needed for a group to be successful is for it to have people sharing their own personal idea s and thought and occurrences. which then leads to a consensus. With groupthink the group is seemingly only intervening with each other to finish the task it seems like and only want to get to the next issue just to “finish”.

I was also intrigued by the negative connotation that seemed to be associated with “groupthink.” To my mind, a “groupthink” should be inherently positive and mutually beneficial for the group.

I think the decision to focus on Kennedy was interesting as I am sure many people can see this in their every day life too, whether at work or even in social setting. Moreover, in a professional setting it may be hard to disagree with someone like your boss so no one ever corrects them and everyone goes on to accept their decision.

I feel the example of Kennedy is an interesting choice. It shows one of the most prestigious positions in the world using groupthink.

I was also interested in this idea that people are too nice in a group setting. I find myself falling into this category, but I suppose it’s important to be assertive and express your opinions. To counteract the negative aspects of groupthink it’s almost necessary for all participants to be open with each other.

I really liked this post and thought you made a lot of really good points. The reason why groupthink is dangerous is that when you get a group together of like-minded people it intensifies their views on the topic they are discussing. Using the Bay of Pigs as an example JFK and his advisors were overly optimistic about their plan working due to groupthink.
