On Comedy

Comedy is a complex and complicated joy in my life. I love listening and experiencing comedy because of how well many of my favorite comedians play with the world and words they have available to them. My personal favorite comedian is Jimmy Carr, an unreserved man with a sharp tongue and no regret. His comedy isn’t for everyone though. He is harsh and honest, never holding back, but I love it because of this. The job of a comedian and comedy is to take the world around them(it) expose its deepest traits, traits people are uncomfortable with or find slightly taboo and spin them in a way which creates joy. Comedy comes is the form of a show; where a comedian stands on a stage or is on a show and plays to his audience and/or preset material, in the form of music; take Tenacious D, Flight of the Conchords, and Stephen Lynch who mend music and comedy into brilliant pieces, in the form of satire; works such as the ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ are beautiful because of how they subtly poke at the political and social agenda around them. Comedy is a way to escape reality by examining it closely and exposing everything about it and I love it.
