Technology- Caroline Rowe

Technology has changed the way our society operates and connects with each other. Overtime technology has evolved in numerous ways. What started with the radio and television has evolved into the age of Apple products such as iPhones and iPads. Although technology has helped us in many ways, it has also negatively impacted our society. With people constantly being attached to their screens, technology has made humans desensitized and have a shorter attention spans. I feel that quarantine can be an example of how technology helped and hurt society simultaneously. It was helpful because we could continue school and work even in the midst of a pandemic. It was crazy to see how technology has advanced to such a degree that the world could continue to function as it did before. From a different perspective, being on a zoom call all day shortened attention spans. Most students often looked at their phones during zoom classes because our attention couldn’t be held for that long. This is how technology has advanced to help and hurt society.

I agree with the idea that technology has brought on both positive actions and negative consequences. Our generation has become majorly addicted to our screens and like you said, quarantine made it even worse. Being trapped in our houses for so long with nothing to do forced us to turn our devices to help keep us sane. However, I began to rely on my phone and laptop more than I ever have and I was spending way too much time staring at my screen. I also agree with the point that technology did provide a helping-hand when it came to education during the pandemic. Having Zoom and Google Classroom at our disposal allowed for us to continue the school year and finish what we were learning while remaining a safe distance apart.

I definitely agree that technology has created both major issues for humans as well as has helped humans with multiple things. For example, in stores that use self-checkout or a kiosk to order food, causes an in-person feeling that you miss from not speaking to others about their day and overall interaction. While the computer version may be faster and more efficient, it creates a different atmosphere and feeling over the store or restaurant. In addition, our generation has become attached to technology, always looking down and responding to people who are next to us. While technology is very beneficial, it has hurt culture too.
