New Media- Lana Vjestica

New media to me is the type of technology or social media that’s relevant. A good example of this would be Tik Tok. People worldwide are using it and talking about it. This app teaches people a variety of things like how to cook to knowing how to check the oil in your car. It may seem very similar to Youtube but even now Youtube is starting to become older media. It goes back YEARS and has videos like “Chocolate Rain” that aren’t currently relevant. Since Tik Tok has become more popular, it has been a great way for companies to push out their ads and ideas. As soon as you open the Tik Tok app, you are greeted with an ad. As you scroll through, within 10-15 minutes you’ll get as least one or two more ads. This does not include the content of the regular Tik Tok you’ll see as you go through your “for you” page. There has been a few times where someone on the application will post about a certain product and within that same day it will be sold out. It’s interesting to see how this New Media affects everyone.

I completely agree with you. I think TikTok is a clear example of new media as it has outlasted and outperformed other apps such as Musical.ly and Vine. Specifically, the concept of Vine “dying” comes to mind. We are at the point in technology where apps are replaced for newer and more flashy platforms. Public opinion certainly determines which apps last the longest, however, have no control over what the app developers change about the app. This idea, in relation to new media, suggests that while we have sway over the changes to popular forms of media, ultimately it is the titans of industry such as Mark Zuckerberg that controls how these formats operate.

Consider how we might measure the impact of “public opinion” and compare it to the impact of “commercial monetization.” These might be very interesting avenues to research.

Tiktok is a great example of new media as it came and sweeped the public and even has adults what was once thought as just a kids app. This shows how new media gets the publics stamp of approval and it is seen as socially abnormal to not have the new type of media.

I think Tik Tok is an interesting example of media to look at when seeing how media affects culture and identity because of it’s somewhat unique algorithm. I have spoken to friends and seen people talking online about how well they felt that Tik Tok “knew” them. This feeling of connection with the app is something I have also felt myself when using it. When you feel like the content is really “for you” (as the application’s main feed says), I think it is easier to let the content you are consuming affect your own life. One example of this that you sort of touched on in your writing is how viral products can go on Tik Tok. It is not only one off products that go viral though. It is easy to see the impact of of Tik Tok trends on today’s culture, especially in fashion. Various fashion styles, often falling under the larger terms of “aesthetics”, have gone viral on Tik Tok. One example that comes to mind is the popularity of corset tops for a while on Tik Tok. The tops have now fallen out of trend a bit and the corsets many hastily bought off amazon are probably sitting in the backs of closets or donation piles. Some sustainability focused internet content creators have criticized Tik Tok for its creation of “micro-trends” which leads to items to falling in and out of fashion quicker than ever before. Then, these discarded pieces head to the landfill exacerbating the already prevalent issue of fast fashion and textile waste. I believe that fashion play a significant role in both the larger culture of an area and an individual’s personal identity, thus making Tik Tok’s impact on fashion trends worth mentioning in a class that inspects the interactions between these concepts.

I think tik tok is a perfect example of new media. It’s almost scary to see how much of an influence it has on public opinion, especially among teenagers. What’s really crazy to me is how many different demographics of people it reaches and brings together through its precise algorithm. The idea of Tik Tok as a mode for boosting brand awareness and marketing is also so interesting. I don’t think there’s ever been another form of new media that’s been as influential in impacting consumer buying decisions.
