New Media: Thomas Takele

I believe that new media is just as technology, in that it is always evolving and growing and that there is really no way to track all the way back to its originality. In my opinion, media has always been here and will be here to stay. People are always nervous about new things being brought to them because they have found comfort in what they already know and new media is something that questions that. This uncertainty continues until the new form of media shows to be either more beneficial or less beneficial to the majority and this is how they become the media of the present instead of new media. Social media was questioned as it first rose to the scene but as people began seeing its usefulness in the connection of people they began to accept it and use it towards their advantage. After this it wasn’t long before people who didn’t have social media became the outliers. This shift shows the change between old media to new media to the present media.

I agree with you when you say that new media is similar to technology under the basis that because it’s constantly evolving, there is not really one pin point of its origin. Additionally, because technology, as well as new media itself is constantly evolving, molding, and growing, the people who consume such media are adaptable, as they grow and evolve at the same time. When referring to the fear people have when uncertainty arises, such that people are fearful over new things; I believe that people are fearful with new things because they are comfortable with past things. Therefore I agree when you spoke about the rise and acceptance of social media. As people become more comfortable with new things, they begin to see its advantages and benefits, and this shift, as you mentioned, made social media the norm. Concluding that the advancement of media leads to shifts within new, old, and present day media.

Don’t worry about including “in my opinion” in posts — everything you don’t cite or refer to the reading will be considered your opinion.

Do you think “new media” will be a useful term for describing or understanding emerging technologies? Or do you think other terms might emerge?

I agree with the fact that social media has now become the new normal. If someone nowadays doesn’t have it, they’re seen as different than everyone else.
