Race- Caroline Rowe

Race is something that makes people unique, can bring people together, but can also be a reason for opression. I think that when it comes to race, education is one of the most important factors to avoid oppression. I think that it is extremely important for race to be taught in schools. Not only the history of race but also how race plays a role in today’s current society. Often times a lack of education leads to racial offenses or misconceptions. Because people are so often influenced by what their parents tell them, the past and present history of race being taught in schools is a way for children to get a perspective on race as their brains are still developing. Especially in today’s age, there is plenty of media to watch or read that focuses on race. To be educated means to understand other’s differences and to not be “colorblind” and to disregard people’s races. I remember as a child watching The Help for the first time and being extremely impacted by that movie. It taught me the racial dynamics of that time period and allowed me to get a greater understanding of race than I could from reading a textbook. I think that watching movies or TV shows that focus on race at a younger age can help children to be educated and therefore become adults who are informed and have an understanding and respect for race and inclusion.

Education as a force to combat racism and oppression is a key concept that should definitely be promoted more. Ignorance about the philosophies that describe race have surely had an impact on the views of race and it therefore in the hands of society through our education forums to create and instill the positive elements that have come about as a result of the racial construct and preach against elements like racism. Exploration and celebration of the different cultures around the world that exist should be promoted not only through the education system but also through alternative sources like media for more exposure to society which is accountable for passing down the ideology of race to current generations and many more to come

I agree that eduction is a very important factor in the fight against racism. From a very young age, we are majorly influenced by things said in our household, but are also influenced by what we are taught in school. There definitely are plenty of media sources available to be shown to children that can teach them to appreciate our differences and to learn from our past. School is a place that we go to educate ourselves, and learning about race is something that will stick with students for the rest of their lives.

I completely agree that education will benefit the issues of racism today. I also do not think that race is taught enough in schools, especially in schools that are not diverse. The history of racism is briefly covered in schools, however, the issues of racism today are ignored. This leads people, specifically white people, to believe that racism no longer exists. These uneducated people are unaware of the societal issues that are still happening, due to implicit biases. More portrayals of race and racism in the media is a good way to teach younger generations of these issues. These media representations must not only be from historic perspectives, because it leads people to believe that society is not affected by racism today.
