Spotify rewrapped: A New Perspective

We also investigated the impacts of Spotify’s music recommendation system on artists. We argue that Spotify has the incentive to promote artists who are backed by major labels through music it recommends. We will use a playlist made by Topsify as an example to show that artists put on playlists are chosen biasedly. In addition, we will analyze Spotify’s market structure and its partnership with record labels to reveal its marketing incentives. Lastly, we will extend our discovery further to show how Spotify’s marketing method will make independent and new artists disadvantaged.
