How Can We Fix It?

The admissions system in the United States today is creating racist and classist outcomes and we as a society have an ethical obligation to amend it. Since our country values The American Dream, we should have institutions that give every “US citizen an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative” (Merriam-Webster). However, poorer and minority students are inherently disadvantaged in the process and may not be able to achieve success. First-generation students, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and racial minorities are inherently disadvantaged in the college admissions process which is wrong. We can, and should work toward fixing these inequalities by creating preparation programs specifically for first-generation students, getting rid of standardized testing, and revamping affirmative action to help both racial minorities and poorer students.
