Questions for Monday’s Class, October 26th

1) Steinbrugge quotes “the recognition of children as people in their own right also contributed to a new understanding of the maternal role.” Graffigny also mentions the role of children within the family and their expectations. During the Enlightenment period, how was the role of the child changing and what effect did this have on the French family and the perception of the female role?
2) The term “nature” shows up a lot in the article assigned. The idea that women were closest to nature was what predestined them to assume their particular role. Do you agree with this? Do you think that women are the moral sex? Does Graffigny think of Zilia as a representative or ideal type of the moral sex? Why or why not?
