Lily’s StoryMap – Geography 210: Geographic Dimensions of Human Development

This is an introductory StoryMap of me that shows my “global citizenship”. With the process of globalization, places are getting nearer and more interdependent on one another. We are all global citizens in this information era, but for me in particular, I’d like to choose traveling as my theme to show my international aspect.

Among the 12 countries or districts I’ve been to, I picked seven locations in this map which has significant influences on my identity: my cultural background, my hobbies, my dream, my important transition point or my future orientation. It’s also a map of my life path – how I physically moved around and how these places marked some special occasions in my life.

On the way of becoming a world traveler and a geographer, my dream is to travel to every corner of this planet and become as much geographic-literate as I can: to study different languages and cultures all over the world. Life is a journey, and I’ll be always on my way traveling to the next stop. This map just serves as brief summary of the start of my journey – the life path of a global citizen growing more global.

I thought this StoryMap excellently related our class theme of globalization. You accurately showed how the different locations that you have visited and lived in have impacted and effected you as a person and a global citizen. I thought your most effective argument was in regards to the differences you recognized in yourself after going home to China from the University of Richmond. I also found the pervasiveness of Japanese culture on your life and interests very persuasive. I enjoyed your interactive features such as the video of your class at the Great Barrier Reef and felt that this helped to support your argument.

I admire the fact that you already seem to have a direction in life, maybe inspired by your trip to the UK?
I loved hearing about your international journey, from familiarity to complete unknown, which you eventually made your “known.” The fact that you were able to go into a country of which you had no prior knowledge is not only an accomplishment in itself, but also shows how well you were able to “trans-culturate” in the different world cultures that you came in touch with. You participated in the different local-specific activities, such as the Japanese game you played when you were in Japan, your SSIR trip to the United Kingdom when you were in the United States. You at the same time retained your Chinese culture but could quickly understand the cultural differences, and function in a different cultural environment.
